To support their knowledge of this half term’s geography topic on climate zones and biomes, considering the answer to our BIG question of ‘What impact do our choices have on the natural world?’, Year 6 visited the Field Studies Council in Bushy Park to carry out some field work of their own. Having distinguished between renewable and non-renewable energy sources, they then visited different locations within the park to gather data related to wind speed, temperature and light. The afternoon was spent getting to know trees (blindfolded at first!) before measuring their height, thickness and canopy spread.
English lessons have taken on a non-fiction vibe recently, with children analysing and comparing a range of nature documentaries in preparation for their own writing. They have noted the inclusion of both formal and technical language, along with particular sentence types such as ‘FACT reminders’ and ‘Tell: show 3;’, and are looking forward to becoming budding Attenboroughs, with their own documentaries being shared as part of their class assembly in a couple of weeks’ time.
The class let off a bit of steam on the very last day of half term, taking part in a djembe drumming workshop which was offered by Kingston Music Service as part of their Black History Month celebrations. Such rhythmic coordination was on display, along with a sense of fun.
