Blog for Friday 22^nd November 2024

Over the last few weeks in Year 5, we have been continuing our journey through Antarctica with Shackleton, his crew and his boat 'The Endurance'. We have been writing informal letters as one the boat's crew and writing poems to describe the treacherous pack ice that the crew encountered. We have been learning about modal verbs and using them in our writing to make inferences about how the crew were feeling at different parts of the story. 

In Science, we completed our test of everyday materials for how well they act as an insulator by measuring the temperature of water over time using a thermometer.  We have also been learning about reversible and irreversible changes, ready for the next part of the topic learning about dissolving and separating mixtures. 

We have been continuing our learning about Antarctica in Geography by looking at its location in relation to lines of longitude including the Equator, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and the Polar Circles. We have also been preparing for our trip to Sky Studios next week by researching facts about climate change in Antarctica as our topic for the day is 'Our Planet'. 

Fractions is our new topic in Maths and this will continue until the end of the term. The children have been looking at equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers (and vice versa).
