Blog for Friday 7th February 2025

It has been an exciting couple of weeks for Year 5 as we continued our Tudor topic with a visit to Hampton Court. The children did a self-led tour around the Tudor parts of the palace and then we had a workshop about the different jobs and roles at Hampton Court when Henry VIII ruled there. We finished our day with some sketching of one of the 241 chimneys for our art work back at school. An informative and engaging day our for all!

In Science, we have been continuing with our topic of forces by testing Friction,  Air Resistance and Water Resistance. For Friction the children used Force Meters to test the force needed to pull a range of shoes with different trend types across the table and we tested Air Resistance by making different sized parachutes and timed how long they took to land. This week we were learning about Water Resistance by making different shapes from plasticine and timed how long they took to fall in water. We have written conclusions to these experiments explaining what we have found out and why some results may not have been accurate as they did not fit the pattern.

We started our storytelling unit in English with a workshop with the author Tola Okogwu celebrating National Storytelling Week. Mila kindly bought in Tola's first book (Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun) and we did a Book Club based on the first couple of chapters.

Mrs Allan then used storytelling techniques to tell 'The Girl Who Ate her Brother' and then after reading it from the actual text, we discussed which way we preferred to hear the story and why. We then used storyboarding to identify the main events and worked in partners to retell the story using expression and thinking about the volume, the content and our body language when we tell stories.
