Over the past few weeks, Year 5 have started their new book in English called 'The Journey' by Francesca Sanna. This picture book documents a fictional family's journey leaving their home country and starting their journey to live in another place. We used the imagery in the books to make inferences about what happened to the family and how their lives might have changed. We learnt about National Refugee Day (June 20th) and created posters celebrating refugees with this year's focus 'Our Home'.
In maths, we are completing our work on decimals this week having looked at adding and subtracting decimals with a different number of decimal places, multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 and finding missing numbers with all of those sums. We move onto negative numbers and unit of measure where multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 will help with solving problems!
This week we have been learning about Sport Climbing as part of our work for National Sports Week. We have been watching the qualifying sessions for the Olympics for both Speed Climbing and the combined event of Lead Climbing and Bouldering. We have been researching about all the different aspects of climbing including when and why it became an Olympic sport, the different positions when climbing and where people can climb in the local area! The world record for the men's Speed Climbing is 5.48seconds and the women's is 6.53 seconds - we are looking forward to seeing if they can be broken at the Olympics this year!
We have also been busy practising all the events for Sports Day - High Jump and Javelin have been our focus for the last week. It was the Nursery children's sports day this week and as we are their buddy class some of us went and helped out on the events demonstrating for the children and others helped with Reception PE really developing our skills in teaching others!
