Blog for Friday 4th October 2024

The Year 1 children spent a wonderful day taking part in a workshop about castles, knights and medieval life. It began with a session about the people who lived in a castle; they dressed up as different characters and learned about their importance within the castle. The children moved on to a very lively session about medieval medicines. There were some shocking discoveries including the use of chickens, snakes and poo for curing the plague and infected skin! However, the children also discovered that some medicines from the past - honey, ginger and herbs - are still very much around today, for cooking and cold remedies.

After this, the children (and adults) tested their problem-solving skills to construct wooden catapults. The finale of the day was taking part in a re-enactment of a medieval battle. Preparation included building a castle with walls strong enough to withstand a battering ram propelled by the children.

As part of their science topic this term, the children carried out an investigation to try and answer the question, “If you have long feet, do you need long gloves?”.  After carefully drawing around their feet and hands, the children measured their drawings using multilink cubes. They recorded the measurements, and these were compared across the class. If you have the chance, ask your child what they found out from the investigation.
