Blog for Friday 28^th March 2025

Over the past few weeks, Year 3 have been exploring the text Varjak Paw and have identified the way that inverted commas have been used, before punctuating our own direct speech with inverted commas. We then looked at the difference between direct and indirect speech.  We learnt that direct speech uses quotation marks to show the speaker's words, whereas indirect speech reports what someone said without using their exact words. Following on from this, we looked at alternative words for said, we came up with uttered, announced and shouted to name but a few. 

We have been looking at measure in Maths. An exciting activity as shown in the picture, involved being able to measure different liquids to make a medicine for George (from George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl). We made sure to look carefully at the measuring cylinders. We have since moved onto our money unit, we have looked at how money is used and different currencies from around the world. We have worked with physical manipulatives to make as many combinations as we could, adding up to a pound. We also have looked at adding money, as well as taking on the role of a shopkeeper selling a mystery item, giving the customer the correct change. 

To start one of our Science lessons, we had two hula hoops per group and had to sort animal cards into the different hoops to classify them. Some ways included, by the different diets that different animals have, using the terminology carnivore, omnivore and herbivore. We looked at some bones in our body, we used this knowledge to sort animals with and without backbones. We used the terminology, vertebrates for animals that have a backbone inside their body and invertebrates for animals that don't have a backbone, like worms and jellyfish.
