  • Calculation Policies

At St Luke’s, we believe that a clear and consistent approach to teaching calculations is essential for building strong mathematical foundations. Calculation policies outline the progression of methods used to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, ensuring that children develop confidence and fluency in their mathematical thinking.

These policies provide a structured pathway from concrete, hands-on experiences to more abstract methods, enabling children to grasp mathematical concepts at their own pace. They also support parents in understanding how calculations are taught, allowing them to reinforce learning at home effectively.

By following a carefully designed sequence of strategies, we help children develop not only accurate calculation skills but also problem-solving abilities, reasoning, and a deeper understanding of number relationships. Our aim is to equip every child with the skills they need to approach mathematics with confidence and success.

We use the White Rose Calculation Policy to guide our teaching. These documents include an overview of the core representations that we use at St Luke's and a breakdown of the skills required for each operation. Click on the calculation policies below to see how we teach each operation across the different year groups.
