At St Luke’s we believe in fostering a positive attitude towards mathematics. Children should develop a clear, logical and systematic way of working and seek maths as a tool to solve everyday problems. We aim to teach maths creatively with the use of concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations to acquire a greater depth of understanding. Children work co-operatively, exploring maths ideas together and supporting each other to see new concepts in different ways.
We provide a stimulating curriculum with a strong emphasis on knowledge of numbers, and set high expectations of what pupils can achieve. Children take part in regular oral work, particularly mental calculation. They are also given opportunities to apply their knowledge and choose appropriate mathematics to investigate and solve problems. Our scheme of mathematics work is supported by a range of materials to ensure that children cover all the required areas of the curriculum.
